Clifford's Tower has sat at the heart of the city since the Norman Conquest, and over the years it's been a royal mint, a medieval stronghold and a garrison in the Civil Wars. In 1190, one of the worst anti-Semitic massacres of the Middle Ages took place on the site of the tower when York’s Jewish community were trapped there by a violent mob and many Jews chose to commit suicide rather than be murdered. We are delighted to share with you a major representation project at Boscobel House and the Royal Oak. Both the house and the tree became famous as hiding places of the future King Charles II after defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. This led to one of the greatest adventure stories of all time and a pivotal point in the history of England, celebrated to this day by over 500 pubs named the Royal Oak. The new on-site experience is themed around Hide and Seek, and we’ve also re-introduced animals to Boscobel’s farmyard for the first time in over 100 years. The gardens, farmyard, and play area will be open from 12 April 2021, and the house from 17 May.
